How to Know When Your Small Business is Ready More Staff

Starting and running a small business is about pacing growth, so that you don’t overstep your limitations. The last thing you want to do is suffer unnecessary expenses early on, when your budget is the most delicate. At the same time, at some point you will need a few new computers, you will need to dump some money into advertising and you will need to hire some staff to accommodate the growth of your company. For now, let’s focus on the latter of these options.

It took me a little while to get my law firm off the ground, I’m a Atlanta DUI lawyer, but somewhere when my business was in it’s “terrible twos” I realized that I was overbooked and slowly falling behind. I was so worn out, not only from dealing with clients and going to court, but with all the office work that comes with running a business. I knew that I needed help before it all caught up with me, so I hired an assistant.

It’s incredible what you can accomplish once you start to share the load of running your small business. Mine was a one man show for so long that I almost forgot that I had the option of hiring new staff; when I did it was life changing. Not only did I not have to worry about scheduling appointments, making copies of client files and answering the telephone, but all of the other stuff more directly associated with my work as an Atlanta DUI attorney became less stressful.

The lesson I pulled out of this encounter, is that at a certain point people’s productivity will drop if they are overwhelmed. While it seemed like I was saving my law practice a little money by doing it all by myself, I was actually restricting any possibility for growth and hurting my company as a result.

If you are stretching yourself thin for your business, know that hiring a little help is not merely an expense–it’s an investment.
